The automotive industry of Pakistan enjoyed a strong start in 2017. Many new cars have been introduced in only five months while more are announced to be launched in the near future. Several manufacturers, both local and international, have shown interest in the Pakistani market. This depicts that the auto sector will definitely improve over the course of the next few years. Looking at the current scenario, existing players are bringing revisions across their product lineup with many international features and cabin amenities. As an avid promoter of ‘locally made,’ following is a list of my preferred local cars currently available in Pakistan, which provide the best value for money, based on their safety equipment, features, and overall performance:
Suzuki Celerio has been launched in Pakistan under the name of Suzuki Cultus in April 2017. Unlike the old Cultus, this newer model comes with a good number of features and safety equipment. It is the most technologically advanced (locally assembled) hatchback in 1000cc category. Pak-Suzuki has introduced this car in two variants and my pick is the higher end VXL model. Key features include:
One more thing to keep in mind is that, unlike the base grade Cultus, the VXL has a chrome grill and other cosmetic changes in both exterior and interior, which gives the car a more upmarket look. This variant is priced at PKR 13,91,000, which might sound a little high for a hatchback but it does provide good value for money even when compared to imported cars.
Faw V2 is a small hatchback introduced by Alhaj group a few years ago. A brand new car costs a very reasonable PKR 10,69,000. Its key features are
If you consider the price, this has to be the best hatchback available in Pakistan whether compared to locally made or imported cars. With a 1300cc engine and the presence of top-notch security features, V2 is a good value for money automobile.
The Honda City available in Pakistan right now made its first appearance in 2008. While the world had moved on to the sixth generation years before this one was launched in Pakistan, we have to make do with the old fifth generation of this car. Although a new model is expected to be launched in 2018, there has been no official statement about it. Honda City is a very robust small family sedan which provides excellent fuel economy and comfort at a very reasonable price. There are two variants of Honda City on sale today. One is regular while the other one is known as City Aspire with more upmarket features and styling. Our pick is the Aspire 1.3L prosmatec. Key features of this model include:
This variant is priced at PKR 17,95,000 but it’s the car premium has skyrocketed because the wait time is too long. If you book a City Aspire today, it will be delivered to you after 6-7 months or you can get it now by paying a premium of PKR 1,20,000-1,50,000.
Honda Civic is currently available in three variants in Pakistan. Our pick is the mid spec VTi oriel model. Not only it has all the features you need but also a better value for the money when compared to the other two variants. Honda Civic has a very modern and beautiful looking interior and exterior. The key features which make it a better pick when compared to other sedans available in Pakistan are:
This variant is priced at Rs 2,499,000 and comes with a 1.8L VTEC engine.
Honda BR-V is a subcompact SUV launched recently in Pakistan. It’s a direct competitor of the Suzuki APV and FAW Sirius S80, both of which failed to grab a considerable market share. The case of Honda BR-V is not the same as it has managed to grab a lot of attention. During its booking period, BR-V was sold out within the first few weeks. It is launched in two variants and my pick is the fully loaded S trim. The key features which set this SUV apart are:
BR-V is equipped with a 1.5L engine, same as the one in City Aspire 1.5 and is available at a very competitive price of PKR 23,29,000.
First generation Toyota Fortuner face lift was launched a few years back by Toyota IMC here in Pakistan. It was the only locally made SUV available at the time. Although it was a good vehicle, it lacked the safety equipment and features which should have been standard for a vehicle of such price range. Earlier this year, Toyota Launched the all new Fortuner with stylish and muscular exterior and beautiful interior. Other than the fact that new Fortuner is a very beautiful vehicle, it now comes with features which makes it a good value for the money automobile. The key features of the 2nd gen Fortuner are:
All these features make the new Fortuner a very sophisticated, safe and proper off-road vehicle, suited for the driving conditions in Pakistan. The car costs PKR 52,49,000. It comes with a 2.7L engine and has all the features you need.
